Hi friends.

I fancy myself a food blogger (ha), and as such, I hesitate to speak politics here. Food blogs are perhaps spaces that should be free of ugly realities; dedicated only to idle chatter and kitchen high jinks. I feel like I’m usually pretty good at containing myself to those margins.

I’m not going to do that today. First off, treating others with integrity and humanity is not a political issue. Beneficence is not red or blue, it doesn’t sit on the left or right side of the legislative chamber. Behaving with decency a freaking tenet of civilized society. So there’s that.

Second, damn, folks, this is America.  Our country was founded on certain beliefs, to wit:

It’s right there in the preamble of the highest law of our land. Domestic Tranquility. General Welfare. Blessings of Liberty.  Point blank.

It’s also right there in the Pledge, the words declared as we face our flag with our hands over our hearts. Liberty and Justice for all.  Not just for people who look like me, or go to your church, or agree with Bobby McRandomperson’s Game of Thrones theories. Everyone.

So how can these white supremacists dare call themselves Americans? Seriously, how dare you. What you are preaching is not American, it is not kind, and it is not Christian. I only use the word Christian because I identify as such, what I really mean is “religion in general, aka Muslim, Buddhist, what-have-you.”

Fascism is not American, carrying a Nazi flag is not American. Why does this even need to be said? Our country is flawed, yes, no debate. But those of us who love the Constitution are not going down without a fight.

Liberty will prevail.

Sweet Potato Brownies (gluten free and vegan)

  • 1 1/2 lbs sweet potatoes
  • 3/4 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1 1/4 cup almond milk
  • 1 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • mini chocolate chips
  1. Pierce the potatoes with a fork and wrap them in a wet paper towel. Microwave them until fully cooked, about 8-10 min.
  2. Preheat oven to 400 and line and 8×8 pan with parchment paper.
  3. Combine all ingredients, minus the chocolate chips, in a blender until a smooth, even consistency is reached.
  4. Pour the batter into your prepared pan and smooth it out. It will be really thick and sticky.
  5. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the batter (as many or as few as you like).
  6. Bake at 400 for 50 minutes.
  7. Allow to cool completely before cutting.
  8. Serve with love, liberty, and a cold glass of milk.
